Speaker: Ken Garfield, former religion editor

Topic: Confessions of a Religion Writer

How the bar mitzvahed son of an eye doctor from suburban New York City became religion editor at the Carolinas’ largest newspaper is a story he’ll share with us. He says, “I spent 22 years at The Observer, including 10 as religion editor, covering such saints and sinners as Billy Graham, Jim and Tammy Bakker, and an ex-con Elvis lookalike faith healer who sold ‘miracle water’ out of milk jugs.” Ken also spent 12 years as Director of Communications at Myers Park United Methodist Church.

Today his passion is writing obituaries, usually in advance, of people who contract for his services.. “I help clients answer the big questions: Should I list my pet as a survivor? My ex-spouse?”

NOTE: The last day for online registration/payment is Monday November 23. Checks mailed to the Queens’ mailbox must be received by Friday November 20.
